Ninety cM is a lead, not a name tag
A 90 cM match can be an excellent genealogy lead because it often belongs to a real shared ancestral line. It is less useful as a relationship label. At this distance, several generations and several family structures can produce the same total.
The first question is whether the match belongs to a recognisable shared-match cluster. If they match a group of people connected to one of your documented great-grandparents, you have a place to look. If the match is isolated, preserve the note and return later.
The longest segment changes the conversation
One long segment is generally more suggestive of a recent shared ancestor than the same total spread over many small pieces. It does not tell you the exact relationship, but it can keep you from treating every 90 cM total as equivalent.
Endogamy can complicate the picture. Where families have intermarried over generations, several distant paths can add up. Use documented locations and multiple clusters before assuming a single recent cousin path.
