One range, several family stories

This is one of the most consequential ambiguity zones in genetic genealogy. A half sibling belongs in your generation; an aunt, uncle, or grandparent does not. The DNA can support each path because all can share roughly a quarter of your autosomal DNA.

That is why birth years deserve a place next to centimorgans. A 30-year age gap does not prove an avuncular relationship, but it makes it a better starting hypothesis than half sibling. Family structures vary, so keep the list open until the match network supports it.

Use sensitive information carefully

A close unexpected match can affect more than the two people looking at the screen. Before reaching out, save the match data, inspect the shared matches, and give yourself time to separate what the result shows from the story you are tempted to tell about it.

If the question is full versus half sibling, fully identical regions are valuable. Full siblings usually share sizeable fully identical regions; half siblings generally do not. That still belongs alongside, rather than ahead of, direct family evidence.

Overlapping shared-centimorgan ranges for close family relationships.
The useful part of a range chart is the overlap: a total can narrow a list without naming one relationship.

What else could fit?

PossibilityWhy it can look similarWhat to check
Half siblingShares one parent and often falls near this range.Same generation; low or absent fully identical regions.
Aunt or uncleShares a parent with one of your parents.Usually a generation older and matches your parent as a sibling.
GrandparentDirect-line inheritance can produce the same expected share.Age and parent-match pattern settle most cases.

What to do next

  1. Do not send a message while the relationship is still a guess.
  2. Check the person’s age, shared matches, and whether a parent or known aunt can test.
  3. If appropriate, compare fully identical regions before choosing between full and half sibling.

Questions people ask

Can 1,750 cM be a grandparent?

Yes. Grandparents and half siblings can share similar totals.

Can DNA alone prove half sibling?

Total cM alone cannot. Other segment data and family context are needed.

Should I contact the match immediately?

There is no need to rush. Preserve the facts, check the match network, and consider the impact on everyone involved.
